They have put on a sumptuous feast for you, conversation was delightful, truly an enjoyable evening. As you and your wife stand up to leave you reach in your pocket for your wallet and ask your friend how much you owe... Imagine Christmas morning with your 9-year-old son. You have given them the very thing he has been asking for, a beautiful swiss army pocket-knife. Needless to say he is enraptured, wants to carve something, cut something -- anything to use this marvellous gift. He stands up with eyes shining, throws his arms around you [hopefully with the knife folded], and just before he runs off to play he turns around and tells you that he'll pay you for it out of his allowance later... A debtor's ethic may be an easy trap to fall into, but it is an ugly, abhorrent thing when viewed from God's grace-filled eyes... Imagine going to a dear friend’s house for dinner. We like the apostle Paul are in debt (Romans 1:14-15) to our neighbors and the nations owing them gospel proclamation and gospel demonstration, that we would demonstrate the gospel by living it out in their midst. That is the debt we owe and a debt that needs more emphasis. In light of this I think we need to take note of who Piper, and Scripture, says we are in debt to, namely the nations.
